"The bottom line: A dramatic diet change (protein shake, low glycemic load, plant-based low-calorie diet but no exercise) in diabetics reversed most features of diabetes within one week and all features by eight weeks. That's right, diabetes was reversed in one week. That's more powerful than any drug known to modern science.

We know from gastric bypass patients that with rapid changes in diet right after surgery, within just a few days, without significant weight loss, diabetes goes away -- fatty livers heal, cholesterol levels plummet. Some theorized it was because of changes in the stomach hormones related to the gastric surgery. Others, including the researchers of this new study surmised that maybe it was just the drastic change in diet. So they went about studying just the diet change without surgery."

"This finding is quite novel because current drug development efforts target immune cells (macrophages, T-cells) to eliminate this hyperinflammation," said Jorge Moscat, the study's principal investigator and chair of UC's cancer and cell biology department, in a university news release. "Our research suggests obesity-related glucose intolerance has nothing to do with the immune system. It may be more effective to target (fat cells)."

In laboratory animals, the researchers found that a gene known as protein kinase C (PKC)-zeta plays a dual role in molecular signaling associated with inflammation. Obesity, they said, can switch the gene from acting as an inflammation regulator to an agent promoting inflammation. PKC-zeta does this by causing fat cells to secrete a substance called interleukin-6 (IL6), which streams to the liver in large quantities to cause insulin resistance.

The study appears in the July 7 issue of the journal Cell Metabolism."

Researches now know that inflammation appears to be the main cause for Type 2 Diabetes (Diabetes mellitus).

"Steve Shoelson, M.D., Ph.D., a Diabetes Researcher with Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, says in patients with type 2 diabetes, obesity appears to cause inflammation that may eventually affect cellsí ability to use insulin. Traditional diabetes treatments target the symptoms (i.e., lower blood sugar levels), but donít address the cause of the problem (the inflammation).

Researchers are now testing the use of an anti-inflammatory medication, called salsalate. Salsalate is a chemical cousin of aspirin and itís currently approved for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and other inflammatory conditions. In diabetes, salsalate appears to shut off the protein that causes inflammation. Allison Goldfine, M.D., Clinical Research Director at Joslin, says two earlier studies have found patients taking the drug had improved markers of inflammation and lower fasting blood sugar levels. The investigators say salsalate may help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. In a more recent study, the researchers found salsalate may also be useful in treating patients who already have type 2 diabetes.

Researchers are now testing the usefulness of salsalate for treating diabetes in a wider clinical trial. Another study will look at the drugís effects on atherosclerotic plaque in the coronary arteries. Hopefully, reducing the markers of inflammation will decrease plaque build-up and decrease the risk for cardiovascular complications from diabetes. For more information on the studies, check out

Side effects of salsalate include hearing problems, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), nausea, rash and vertigo. Health experts say non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, like salsalate, are also associated with an increased risk for ulcers or stomach bleeding."

BETHESDA, Md., March 2, 2010-New research published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology suggests that simvastatin negatively impacts the immune system's ability to clear infection and control inflammation in the presence of bacteria.

Simvastatin might help us control our cholesterol, but when it comes to infection, it's an entirely different story says a new research study published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology ( In the research report, scientists from Italy show that simvastatin delivers a one-two punch to the immune system. First it impairs the ability of specialized immune cells, called macrophages, to kill pathogens. Then, it enhances production of molecules, called cytokines, which trigger and sustain inflammation."

"Arthritis Drug Scores Well in Diabetes

Clinical studies of generic arthritis drug salsalate showed promising early results that the drug may be useful for the treatment of patients with Type II diabetes as well. In a three-month trial led by Joslin Diabetes Center researchers, those who took salsalate showed significantly improved blood glucose levels.

Patients in the study all had levels of hemoglobin A1C in the range of 7.0 to 9.5 percent. A significant number of those who took salsalate saw that number drop by 0.5 percent, which is in the range of several recently released diabetes drugs. Other tests related to glucose levels also showed substantial improvement.

Overall the drug appeared to be safe and to be well tolerated. Study results were reported online this month in the Annals of Internal Medicine.Preclinical results also suggested that salsalate should reduce both microvascular and macrovascular complications associated with diabetes, although additional clinical trials are needed to test that in people."

Not just low glycemic foods but also anti-inflammatory foods as well help with the insulin resistance. In general good foods are: flax seed, omega 3 fatty oils (Sources of Omega 3 include: canola and olive oil, flax seeds, fish such as salmon, tuna, swordfish, and halibut, walnuts, and pumpkin seeds). Spices such as tumeric, ginger, black pepper, cinnamon, saffron also have anti-inflammatory properties. I'm 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weigh 230 pounds. I know that diet and exercise are the answer, but I don't know how to make it happen. -- Danetta, Tulsa, Okla.

A. Sounds like your job may be killing you. Work stress is a risk factor for diabetes as are excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle, so you've hit the trifecta. But in this economy, you may not be able to cut back hours, so try these ideas for a pain-free, healthier life:

Your feet: Stretch and ice daily. Every morning, sit up in bed, rest the painful foot on the opposite leg and pull your toes toward your head to stretch your plantar fascia, the tough tissue that runs along the underside of your foot (it's inflamed). If both feet hurt, reverse legs and repeat. Once you're up, ice the bottoms of your feet for 20 minutes; do this at night, too.

Food: Brown-bag it. Toss together rainbow-colored salads. Bring lean protein (a small can of tuna or beans), good vinegar and a healthy fat (olive, walnut or canola oil). Make turkey-breast sandwiches on whole-wheat with mustard and colorful fixings. For snacks, hummus and whole-grain crackers, peanut butter and apple slices, nonfat Greek yogurt and grapes.

Fitness: Your health is part of your job now, so plan on two hours a day for exercise. We know it's a lot, but we're saving your health here. When your plantar fasciitis is quiet, walk after meals and on breaks. When it's not, try swimming and water aerobics. Test-drive a rowing machine and a stationary bike. (Wear supportive shoes and do some heel stretches first, so you won't trigger a faciitis attack.) If you can, remove the couch in your home and replace it with the machine that gives you a good -- and painless -- workout. It's an extreme solution, but we promise you'll blow off stress, burn calories, boost your energy and maybe even help your fibromyalgia.
