httpd deamon fails to start when booting Fedora 20 as a server.

Running commands after booting reveals:

(:code lang=Bash wrap=80:) $ sudo systemctl status httpd.service httpd.service - The Apache HTTP Server

   Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/httpd.service; enabled)
   Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Mon 2014-07-28 14:06:45 EDT; 1min 1s ago
  Process: 2378 ExecStop=/bin/kill -WINCH ${MAINPID} (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
  Process: 2290 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -DFOREGROUND (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
 Main PID: 2290 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)

I discovered this is an issue of the NetworkManager not being installed and therefore stalling dependent systemd jobs after a DHCP request until the network IP address is ready.

First install NetworkManager and then enable it

(:code:) $ sudo yum install NetworkManager $ sudo systemctl enable NetworkManager-wait-online.service ln -s '/usr/lib/systemd/system/NetworkManager-wait-online.service' '/etc/systemd/system/' (:codeend:)

Now on your next reboot httpd.service should now start correctly.

Work-around I created prior to solution discovery:

This actually did work but I decided to implement the correct fix.

Edit the file /etc/rc.d/rc.local

  1. !/bin/bash
  2. sleep for 5 minutes - not sure when DHCP request will complete

sleep 300

  1. Start Apache

/bin/systemctl restart httpd.service (:codeend:)

Then issue command:

(:code:) $ sudo systemctl enable rc-local.service (:codeend:)
