INFORMATION FROM THE DOF
(Received the following information from the Florida DOF)
These are the standard 19 channels that every radio in DOF have programmed.
Our portables have a different layout, but it is all pretty much the same
frequencies. Some common fireground frequencies are 1, 9 and 10 when DOF
units are talking to each other. 16, 17, and 18 when we're working on
the fireground with other agencies, such as the structural departments.
Channel 19 is the frequency the different districts talk to each other
(rare) and also how we track our aircraft as they go from district to
district (very common). Our aircraft, like our helicopters and DOF
detection planes, use the frequency for that district or 1, 9, 10, 16, 17,
or 18. When an airtanker or any other non-DOF aircraft is on the fire
scene... our DOF detection plane will coordinate the air effort through
VHF-air frequencies. These range in the 120's.
As the fire occurrence increases around the state, you'll hear a load of
activity on 16, 17, and 18. We have also set up our repeaters in many
areas already for channels 12 and 13. During the normal year the
repeaters are inoperable. During high fire times we will initiate their
use.
The radios we use are Midland 80 Channel Syntec-1, we are currently
switching to the Midland 320 Channel Syntec-2. The Syntec-2 is 100 watts
and really helps the signal get out of the woods. We have NO plans of
going to 800MHz. 800MHz doesn't work well in the forested conditions.
